Jehovah Nissi: God is Our Battle Fighter

I am really enjoying this unit that I have been teaching in Sunday School. We are continuing to learn about the names of God. The past two weeks we were learning about Jehovah Nissi : God is Our Battle Fighter. Once again I feel challenged and encouraged as we look at how that plays out in our lives. Most of our battles are not out on a real battle field and yet we all deal with our own “battles”. Although we don’t deal with the “Battles” that my Sunday school children deal with such as bullies, issues in school, on the bus or on the play ground; there will be other battles like sickness, finances, dealing with other people, or against sin. What a great reminder that Jehovah Nissi : God, Our Battle Fighter is on our side. “If God is for us who can be against us?” Rm. 8:31 Another aspect of God being our Battle Fighter is that he has given us a special set of armor for us so we can fight off Satan. God’s armor helps us defeat Satan. We made up little arrows that Satan might try to shoot towards us. Although the arrows that are coming our way might be different ones, those arrows will come. We do not need to stand alone, God wants us to “Put on the full armor of God so that we you can stand against the devil’s schemes.” These have just been some truths that once again have impacted my life. Praise the Lord that God is “Jehovah Nissi”.

Neti Pot

My blog has been silent for a couple of days as I was down with the flu. There are all sorts of different bugs making its way around camp. I was hoping it would not hit our house but it did. Three of our children are also sick and are dealing with bad colds. We take a lot of Ester C and do a lot of the normal things people do to fight off colds. However, Ruth decided to try some thing new and she came home with a yesterday. Her coworkers were telling her how a "Neti Pot" would be the answer to fighting her cold. I had never seen a “Neti Pot” before. It reminded me of a pot you rub and a “Jeanie” would pop out. It is actually something you use to flush out your sinuses with. I guess there is quite an act to using the thing. (Ruth's coworkers were giving her tips on using it as they believe in it so much.) We’ll see how Ruth’s little experiment with the “Neti Pot” goes and whether this is the answer to getting over a cold quicker. What is your cure all for the common cold???

Celebrating Ruth's Birthday

It has been a neat time in our lives to have our children all living in the same area. Since Ruth will be heading off to college in the fall we know this could be the last birthday Ruth celebrates with us together as
a family for awhile. It is our family tradition to let the birthday person pick a special meal for their birthday celebration. Since Vern and Ruth's favorite meal is the same, and we just had that last week Ruth picked "shish kabobs". We all love them but I have actually never made them before. I spent some time looking for marinates on the internet of shish kabobs. I settled on five different ones. I made two different chicken shish kabobs, two different beef ones, and then a shrimp option as well. It took a bit of prep time the day before as a couple of the kids helped me cut up the meat and get it soaking over night. Then it also took several hours cutting on veggies and loading everything of the wooden skewers. (Since everyone in the family likes different types of veggies I tired to load them in a way so that there were all sorts of options.) Vern did a GREAT job in grilling them all as it was VERY cold outside standing by the grill. However, I think we all thought that the meal was AMAZING! The Shish Kabobs were so tasty. We were all happy that Ruth picked this meal as it was fun to venture out and do some thing new. It is definitely some thing we will have to do again. We all enjoyed the left overs for lunch, YUM! (We actually had a cheese cake and an angel food cake since Ruth wanted cheese cake but some people in the family don't like cheese cake.) It was a nice evening, honoring Ruth's on her special day. Next month it is Caleb's turn!

On The Road To Recovery

Another update came in on Ian. Thanks for your prayers for him. It sounds like he is doing so much better!

Great news today! Ian was able not only to stand, but walked outside the ICU and sat in the sun for a while. He had his first neurological consult and the only deficit mentioned was a tremor. He will have more evaluations later. It will take a few days to screen the blood that is being donated so the transfusion is on hold for the present. All the lines and catheters are out with the possible exception of the arterial line which I failed to ask about, though it would seem that would be removed by now. Ian ate lunch and Ken and Lisa are waiting to see if the food will stay down this time. If it does, then he will no longer need any special supportive care. It is a huge answer to prayer hearing that!! It is an amazing relief to hear that he's finally on the mend! God has surely worked a miracle in his life!!! We are tremendoulsy thankful both for the answers to prayers and for your many prayers!!! Thank you!!!

Happy 18th Birthday Ruth!

One of the greatest joys and blessing Vern and I have had is to be parents. Eighteen years ago another blessings was added to our family. God gave us a precious baby girl. Our family would never be the same again. Ruth has added so much life and laughter into our family. She has a love for life and people. (As I look back over this past eighteen years it seems to have passed before us in a blink of an eye. ) Happy 18th Birthday Ruth! You have grown to be such a beautiful young lady. We are excited about all that God has ahead of you. We hope you have an awesome day!

Update on Ian

This note came in from Ian sister. For those of you who have been praying but have never met the Turnbull family, this is a family picture of them. (Ian is their oldest son.)

"Ian got to sit in a chair this morning, but he was way to weak and just sort of slumped down :( He's getting a blood transfusion Monday. And he is answering more questions and following commands. It is a slow healing process, but God is an amazing God and he has already worked SO many many miracles. :) Thank you all for praying for Ian. We are praying still for complete brain function and and healing physically. God is good and all powerful and we are putting all of our trust in Him and Him alone. He is AMAZING!!! Thank you to everyone for your prayers for Ian and thank you God for the amazing way You have answered them. God is good... God is good!"

The Job Hunt Is Over

We would like to pass on the good news to everyone who has been praying for Caleb and his job search. He has a job and will be starting work on Monday. Thanks so much for your prayers! With so many people laid off right now this is a true provision from the Lord.

NEWS RELEASE - Ruth Dyck AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP AT LSSU

A few days ago Ruth received a letter and we also received a letter from Lake Superior State University. Both the letters were announcing that they were awarding Ruth the "Board of Trustees Ontario Distinguished Scholarship". This is a scholarship for outstanding academic achievement. We are really proud of Ruth. Anyone who knows her, knows she has really pushed herself academically to learn all that she can throughout her high school years. (There were many late nights and early morning study sessions.) Ruth is actually hoping to get into a college in Missouri. However, Lake Superior is her second choice. This scholarship is for about 25% of the tuition so we are still praying for the rest of the finances to work out. GREAT JOB RUTH! You have really pushed yourself academically, and your hard work paid off. We are continuing to pray that your dream of becoming a nurse will become a reality. We know you will make wonderful and compassionate nurse.

Another Update on Ian

This update on Ian just came in:

"Dear friends and family,
This morning dad messaged me and told me that Ian moved his leg and nodded his head in response to some questions, and opened his eyes. He can't squeeze mom and dad's hand yet though. The doctor will wait till later to do a neurological exam. God has greatly responded to everyone's prayers in bringing Ian this far. This is clearly a miracle!!! Praise the Lord!!! His mercies are truly new this morning! Please continue praying!!!

In Christ,
Damarise"

Continue to Pray for Ian

Here is the latest update on Ian: "Still no sign of brain response after 24 hours (more now) without sedatives. Ian had the CT scan and it showed the brain is structurally normal. Unfortunately, through this test they could not see if there was damage from the extended period of below critical blood pressure from the malaria gunk build up. We continue to wait and pray! We know that God is the all powerful God and that nothing is too difficult for Him. Thank you all tremendously for your prayers and encouragement!!!"

Winners of Baby Stats Celebrate

For those of you who have been following my blog, you will remember that about a month before our grand daughter arrived our family made up a little "Baby Stats" chart. Everyone put in their guess for what day our grand daughter would arrive, at what time of the day, what her weight would be, what the sex would be, and how long she would be. The family was split as far as the sex and several people were close on the length since she was between a couple of guesses. However, Seth was the winner on what day she would be born. Caleb guessed her weight exactly so he was the winner on that one. Then Vern was the closest for her arrival time during the day. So what were the prizes given out to the winners? It was lunch out at A & W. Seth's prize was the "Uncle Burger Meal", Caleb's prize was the "Pa Pa Burger Meal", and Vern's was the "Grandpa Burger Meal". For anyone not familiar with A & W, those meals I mentions are actual meals on the A & W menu. The guys went out for their celebration treat the other day. It was a perfect treat to celebrate Auroralyn's arrival.

Update on Ian

Thanks so much for your prayers for Ian. Since I first wrote Ian has air lifted to South Africa to get better medical care. This is an update from Ian's aunt on how he is doing. His family will not have Internet access. If there is some thing major that happens they will try to let every one know. So please continue to pray for Ian as he recovers. THANKS!

Ian is still stable. Ken said that to look at him you would never think things were going well, his whole body and his eyes are yellow, and he has a bunch of tubes in him and they have him heavily sedated and still on a respirator. He said that there are about 8 huge syringe-like things hanging from the walls that are feeding different things into his body. On top of that, he said they come in regularly and do manual pushes of different things into his IV. There is a big drafting-type table in the room with a huge chart on it that they keep recording things on and studying constantly to determine what to do next. He said that there is a clear system to what they are doing and they all are very effecient and expert at it. They have given Ken nothing but hope. He said they are very matter of fact about telling him that this is the normal process and everything is proceeding just as they want it to and expect it to. They tell him that Ian's body is being cleaned up and even tho the values still look bad, they are supposed to look exactly as they do, and they will change and improve. The physician's name is Dr. Barten (not sure of the spelling and don't know the first name). He is an expert in pediatric brain damage. He is on the pediatric ICU full-time (he doesn't leave to go to other units) and he tells Ken that Ian will open his eyes in a day or two, be talking a day or two after that, and will walk out of the hospital in a week or two. I guess he sees or anticipates Ken's skepticism, so he keeps telling him stories about this kid and that kid who were worse than Ian and they recovered fully. Ken said he is very confident and matter of fact about it. he also said that this dr is very passionate about his work and he is all over Ian. He feels that Ian is in amazingly capable hands. The nurses are very good too, and they are also very kind to Ken when they have to keep asking him to move out of their way :) They gave him a spot at the corner of the bed where he can have his hand on Ian's foot and be out their way, but he still gravitates up towards Ian's head eventually. The process is still unfolding though, so the concern is that something could go wrong, change for the worst, or go off course for some reason, but so far that it is not happening and things are progressing in the right direction. He asked this doc how many cases of cerebral malaria he sees and he said 2 or 3 a year. This concerned Ken at first but Dr Barten mentioned that he is consulting with a malaria specialist about Ian's treatment. The doctor on the medi-vac team arranged for Ian to be brought to this hospital specifically so that this particular dr would be managing his treatment. He said there is no one better for Ian's situation. right now, all the fluids and Ian's immune system are focused on cleaning up all the dead cells and debris in Ian's body. I can say from what i know that his brain won't (and shouldn't) come up until his body is stable. The dr said that the same clean up that is actively happening in his body is also happening in his brain. Ken was a little disturbed that Ian's eyes were partially open but his eyes were not moving. I'm sure that looks scary. I told him that the brain shuts down in stages and comes up in stages, and that right now all the oxygen in his brain is going to the lower level functions and not the higher level functions. His brain will focus on the lower brain vital functions first (breathing, kidneys, etc.), and then the vital sensory-motor connections next (reacting reflexively to sensory stimuli like light and pain), but, his brain will not waste one ounce of energy on higher level things like comprehension (on the input end) or with intention (on the output end). His eyes are not moving because his brain does not care right now about understanding the visual world or about looking around to see what's going on in the world. When the brain gets the all clear, is told that the body is stable and that there is now energy to spare, then some of those oxygen resources will start getting channeled out to the higher level brain functions again, and Ian will wake up. It will be slow and stiff at first, the sensory-motor connections to the higher levels may take some time to get up and running, but his brain will adapt and grow new connections where it needs to when the time is right. It just won't deal with that until the brain is ready to engage with the world again. So it is not a bad sign that he is still in a coma. Like the dr told him, his body is doing exactly what it should be doing right now, brain included.

Vern's Birthday

I am posting this for the Dyck family who is waiting for some pictures of our little party. We missed you partying with us. Thanks so much to all our family and friends who called or sent email birthday greetings to Vern. It added to a very special day.

Happy Birthday Vern!

It is time to once again pull out the "YOU ARE SPECIAL TODAY" plate as we celebrate Vern's birthday. Although it is cold outside we plan on having lots of warmth inside as we celebrate as a family tonight enjoying Vern's favorite meal. I only wish all of Vern's siblings and parents could join us as we honor him tonight. Happy Birthday Vern! You are a SPECIAL person, husband, father, and grandfather. I love you and enjoy walking down life's path together with you.

911 Please Pray For Ian

The following is a note from our good friend Hannah whose brother is VERY sick with Malaria. Please uphold him in prayer.

Ian is in the clinic right now. (the clinic is better than the hospital). WOAH! What?! I know that was my first response. I just found out. PLEASE PRAY!!! I guess the malaria meds weren't working and we was too weak to stand up (he has been puking up the malaria meds since yesterday and we've been trying to get them to stay down.) He is now in the clinic... which is more like a hospital with IVs in him giving him salts and sugars and quinine (sp?) a malaria treatment. The Drs. said that about half his blood is gone. The effects of the malaria, which means that it has gotten really far. Please pray!!! We know the Great Physician can heal anything! Thank you!

UPDATE:

Damarise, Sarah, Andrew and I just got back from visiting Ian. The Drs. have given him something to dull the pain and Ian is in and out of it all the time. It's really sad to see him so weak and sick :( The Drs. also said that Ian's blood count which is supposed to be at 400 at the highest or 150 at the lowest was at 65! WOAH!!! I'm not sure what that means but it sounds really bad! They have him hooked up to all kinds of stuff. Dad said that Ian would be at the clinic most of today (Sunday) Please keep praying for him!! And for Mom and Dad too... they haven't been getting much sleep since all this began Thursday so I'm sure they are completely warn out. THANK YOU!

A New Addition

It has been a long four weeks of juggling rides for everyone. However, today we were able to replace our car. We spent a LOT of time looking into different possibilities. Through an interesting turn of events we got in contact with someone who buys cars at auctions. Through this contact we were able to get a pretty good deal. It was a long drive to pick up the car as it was about three hours from us. The roads were snowy but we are home safe and sound. We hope this car will serve us well. Thanks for praying for us through this whole process.

Scratch Week Pot Luck

Tonight we celebrated the end of our scratch week with a pot luck of all sorts of home made dishes. Since most of our students don't have running water in their apartments, one of the hardest things was all the dishes that mount up when cooking from scratch. Other then that it seems like everyone felt they ate good. A couple of people felt like they gained a few pounds during the week with all the good food. Although it was a good experience, I think our students are looking forward to using their electrical appliances again and being able to eat
"normally" again.

Company's Coming

This week our students have been trying out their scratch cooking skills. Although, I have heard of some meals not turning out like expected, I think it has been a good week, and there have been a LOT of success stories. To make the most of this week we asked all the students to invite company over for at least one meal. Monday Ruth was invited out to some students' house for supper, which she greatly enjoyed. Last night Vern and I were invited out and we enjoyed a delicious meal. Then tonight Vern was invited out for supper while the kids and I went to Awana. Our students have done an amazing job this week as they have whole heartily entered into this week of cooking all their meals from scratch. Tomorrow night we will end the week with a pot luck. YUM! I can't wait! I am looking forward to trying all the tasty dishes and desserts.

Cold Weather Warning!

Last night there was a Cold Weather Warning over our way. Temperatures have really dipped down. This morning our thermometer read -27 C outside. Although many places on the Canadian Prairies are experiencing temperature much colder, it is plenty cold for me. I think back to all those times in Venezuela when I was so hot and just wished for colder weather, I take it all back. I would love nothing better then a Venezuelan heat wave to pass through and warm things up for us.

In The Butcher Shop

Ruth has finished up all but one class. Therefore she was going to look for another job that would give her more hours in order to make some money for college in the fall. She didn't have to look far. Ruth got a call from her manager last week asking her if she would consider moving from the "deli department" to the "meat department". One of the ladies in the meat department is going to be having surgery and will be out of commission for a couple of months. Ruth is training now but will be taking over this lady's hours which is almost full time. We feel VERY badly for this lady and her health issues. It is neat however, that the manager had enough confidence in Ruth that she called and offered Ruth this new position. Ruth worked today for the first time in the meat department. She went to work like she normally does in short sleeves. Since the deli and bakery are together it is usually pretty hot back there. This morning she about froze in her short sleeves as she worked back there with all the chilled meats. So she went back after lunch with a nice warm sweat shirt on. Besides coming home and feeling like she had meat up her nose and all over her body, the switch to the meat department has gone pretty smoothly. We are thankful for the provision this will be towards college tuition.

LOST?

Have you lost a bale of hay? Well, someone did. We found this laying on the road. It is a good thing it was not dark or it would have been a bit of a surprise to all of a sudden find this in our lane.

On The Hunt

That's right we are "On The Hunt" for a car. Since we live in the such a small town we have spent a lot of time on the Internet looking at all the classified adds. We have also called many different people and car dealerships. There have also been trips out to dealerships. We will be VERY glad when our HUNT is over. Hopefully we will soon find a car.

What's new with Vern and Holly
