Congratulations To Our High School Graduate

Today we are celebrating another milestone for one of our children. As many of you know by now, I like to use any occasion to celebrate, especially when it involves some thing in the life of one of my children. Whether it was rolling over for the first time, getting a first tooth, walking, learning to read, counting to 100, getting their driver's license, or bringing home their first pay check. Vern and I have been there cheering them on in life. Today will be no different. Today is a day we will be celebrating and honoring our dear daughter who has worked so incredibly hard. Ruth we want you to know how proud we are of you. You have brought us joy beyond measure. It is a thrill to see how God has used you in so many ways whether it is working with our little Cubbies or showing a coworkers that you care about them. God has en gifted you in so many ways. Continue to seek Him and what he has for you in life. Congratulations! We love you and will continue to be here cheering you on in this next phase of life.

The Gift

We have been so blessed to have people, along the path in life, to encourage our children in their dreams. My faithful blog readers will remember last fall how Ruth was able to shadow our family doctor. It was an awesome experience, and our family doctor was amazing. This was such an encouragement to Ruth and fanned the fire already burning to pursue a career in the medical field. Today she received a surprise gift for her graduation from our family doctor. He gave her a medical dictionary. How cool is that! Ruth will be leaving in the fall for university and we pray that God will continue to put special people in her life to encourage her along the path.

Medical Update

Many of you have prayed for our daughter Ruth and all of her health issues. We have tried many different things in trying to build up her immune system before she heads off to college. She has been working with our doctor and had a bunch of blood work done. They were testing her for many different things but there was one, that was a major concern. We just found out today that this test came back negative. We are Praising the Lord for this answer to prayer. She is still working through some things as she is wanting to head off to university in the fall as healthy as possible. Thanks for your continued prayers for her!

Say Cheese

We have been waiting for a nice sunny day to be able to get some graduation pictures taken of Ruth. This afternoon turned out to be a beautiful afternoon so we called up a friend who is a very gifted photographer to get some shots. We had a nice walk around the campus as we stopped and took shots in different locations. Thanks so much Natasha, you did a GREAT JOB!

NEWS RELEASE - Ruth Dyck AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP AT LSSU

A few days ago Ruth received a letter and we also received a letter from Lake Superior State University. Both the letters were announcing that they were awarding Ruth the "Board of Trustees Ontario Distinguished Scholarship". This is a scholarship for outstanding academic achievement. We are really proud of Ruth. Anyone who knows her, knows she has really pushed herself academically to learn all that she can throughout her high school years. (There were many late nights and early morning study sessions.) Ruth is actually hoping to get into a college in Missouri. However, Lake Superior is her second choice. This scholarship is for about 25% of the tuition so we are still praying for the rest of the finances to work out. GREAT JOB RUTH! You have really pushed yourself academically, and your hard work paid off. We are continuing to pray that your dream of becoming a nurse will become a reality. We know you will make wonderful and compassionate nurse.

In The Butcher Shop

Ruth has finished up all but one class. Therefore she was going to look for another job that would give her more hours in order to make some money for college in the fall. She didn't have to look far. Ruth got a call from her manager last week asking her if she would consider moving from the "deli department" to the "meat department". One of the ladies in the meat department is going to be having surgery and will be out of commission for a couple of months. Ruth is training now but will be taking over this lady's hours which is almost full time. We feel VERY badly for this lady and her health issues. It is neat however, that the manager had enough confidence in Ruth that she called and offered Ruth this new position. Ruth worked today for the first time in the meat department. She went to work like she normally does in short sleeves. Since the deli and bakery are together it is usually pretty hot back there. This morning she about froze in her short sleeves as she worked back there with all the chilled meats. So she went back after lunch with a nice warm sweat shirt on. Besides coming home and feeling like she had meat up her nose and all over her body, the switch to the meat department has gone pretty smoothly. We are thankful for the provision this will be towards college tuition.

Being a Shadow

Today Ruth had a pretty awesome experience. She was able to shadow our family doctor for the day. Our doctor knew Ruth was interested in the medical field and so he invited her to walk through his day with him. She learned all sorts of cool things and our doctor took all sorts of time to explain different illnesses and treatments. Ruth was even able to go to the hospital to check on a patient over there. We are so thankful for how God has worked things out for her to experience several "hands on" things in the medical field. In the words of Ruth, "It was the BEST day ever!" We would appreciate your prayers for her that things would continue to open up for her to pursue nursing next fall.

First Quarter Down, Three to go

It seems hard to believe that Ruth is done with her first quarter of school already. This semester she is having double periods of her classes so that she will be done in January. She has been working very hard and is learning a lot. The anatomy course she is taking is proving to be very helpful in preparing her for her studies next year in the medical field. Way to go Ruth, keep up the good work!

Nurse Ruth

Yesterday Ruth had another hands on experience as she removed my stitches. It probably wasn't quite as much fun as our hospital experience last week.

The Entertainer

For six years now Ruth has had a date every Tuesday during her lunch break. She has had the privilege of taking flute lessons from an excellent teacher. Her teacher has been so great in teaching her so much and trying to pass on to her the love of music. Last Tuesday during her lunch break she once again started in with her flute lessons. With college ahead of her next fall, this will be her last year of flute lessons. I don't know about her, but we are REALLY going to miss hearing her practice and play the flute. Therefore we are going to enjoy to the fullest, this last year of our flute "Entertainer".

Anatomy 101

Most of you know that our daughter Ruth wants to pursue a career in nursing. This semester she is taking an Anatomy and Physiology course. She has been learning a lot of cool things. This morning she was able to have a more hands on experience. I went in to get something cut off my leg. We talked to the doctor and he allowed Ruth to be in there to observe. The doctor was so good as he explained every thing he was doing during the procedure. She was able to learn all sorts of valuble information and went away pretty excited about the whole experience.

Happy First Day of School 2008-2009

Today was the first day of school for Ruth and Titus. When we were in Venezuela I home schooled our children. I always wanted to make the first day of school a little special so I would always decorate our school room, make a nice breakfast, and try to make the first day as fun as possible. So the tradition of decorating for the first day of school and having a special breakfast started many years ago. I did find it a little sad as I was decorating late last night that this will be the last time we have "children" going off for their first day of school. Next year it will be "one child" going off for the first day of school. Ruth and Zachary both hope to be starting college next fall but I will not be there to send them off for another "first day of school". So it was a bitter sweet celebration this morning as Ruth started her last year of high school and Titus started 8th grade.

The Results Are In

Ruth received her ACT test results in the mail and she is happy with her results. She did well enough that she is not going to retake the test and try for a higher score. She should be able to get into a nursing program without a problem. She has already started getting
information from different colleges. So we will begin the process of looking into all sorts of colleges and universities. We would appreciate your prayer for Ruth and for God's direction as to where she should attend college.

VICTORY!

Last night we were celebrating with Ruth in the fact that she finished up her chemistry course. Ruth is the only student taking chemistry this year and she is taking it via DVD. She has worked really hard in the last three weeks doing two and some times three lessons a day in chemistry. Since she was out of school for three weeks in February it really was something to celebrate that she finished the course and even got done early. It was a challenging course but she did very well and it has wet her appetite for college chemistry. Since she is wanting to go into nursing we are trying to locate some sort of anatomy course that she can take next year. WAY TO BE RUTH!

A Sigh of Relief

Early Saturday morning Ruth arrived at a Christian High School a couple hours away to take her ACT test. She was pretty nervous about it, so when we got to our hotel room we tried to have a very relaxing evening. We waxed our hands and soaked our feet in my foot spa and enjoyed chilling together. Then we were up early and out the door for her to take the test. She had her number 2 pencils, an eraser, her calculator and was good to go. The test was over at 1:00 p.m. so we headed to a restaurant for a well deserved lunch.

ACT TEST

Tomorrow Ruth will be taking the ACT test. Anyone who wants to go to college in the States needs to either take the SAT test or the ACT test. Depending on what your score is it will open up doors to colleges or programs you are hoping to get in to and it can also be a way of getting some scholarship money towards college. The closest place for Ruth to take this test is two hours away. Since the test starts at 8:00 a.m. we have decided to go this afternoon and spend the night. That way Ruth won't have to get up at 5:00 a.m. and be half asleep while she is taking the test. Although there some stress involved in taking this test we are hoping when the test is over we can enjoy some fun time together going out to eat and maybe even getting a bit of mall time in. (smile)

Back to Work

Yesterday was Ruth's first day back at work in over two months. She still has some bad days and does not have her energy level back yet, however. she felt ready to regain some of her life back. We'll see how she does and Lord willing this won't be too much for her system. She did come back from work all bubbly as she enjoyed connecting with coworkers and her deli customers once again.

Heartbeat

Ruth gets to wear this cool "walk man" for the next couple of days. Since one of my sons and I both have a heart condition the doctor is just making sure that Ruth's heart is beating normally and that she does not have the same condition.

The Road to Better Health

The Road to Better Health does not have a speed limit on it, although most travel it very slowly to get to their final destination which is Enjoying Better Health. We are trying all sorts of things to help our daughter build up her immune system and enjoy better health. Beside the carrot juice and eating lots of fruits and vegetables here are the supplements we have added to her diet. There is Barely Green, Ester C, Florafood, Proancynol 2000, Flax Seed, a multi- vitamin, calcium, carrot powder, and beet powder. Some need to be taken on a empty stomach and other with food so it is quite something to be able to take all these supplements at the right times during the day. We are hoping that in the next few weeks we can start to see a difference and that Ruth will start to feel better. Although we know the thing that will help her the most is prayer, so please continue to pray for her. THANKS!
